No! There are different types of doors, such as standard entrance doors, and double-opening doors of both sliding construction (usually called patio doors) and hinged construction (french doors).
Doors are also available in a range of materials – PVCu, aluminium and, more recently, composite materials.
These modern materials offer many benefits, and are available in a range of colours and styles – from white, cherry wood, mahogany, or a range of bright bold colours. You can even have one colour on the inside and a different colour on the outside.
However, the most important aspect of any door is its strength and security. Most external doors come fitted with a multi-point locking system, but it is important to realise that the standards and specifications of these can vary enormously.
Request confirmation that the locking system is endorsed by the Association of British Insurers ‘ABI’ and Master Locksmiths Association ‘MLA’. To check this out, log onto www.locksmiths.co.uk
Finally, all high security locking systems will be accredited by Secured by Design, which is a major police initiative backed by the Home Office and endorsed by all leading insurance companies. All SBD accredited locking systems are ‘Police Preferred Specification’. Always look for the logo pictured here.
